Overview
Superphénix demonstrated commercial-scale sodium-cooled fast-reactor technology. Liquid sodium transfers heat at low pressure. Fast neutrons enable breeding of plutonium from uranium-238.
How it works
A pool-type primary circuit immerses the core in sodium. Intermediate sodium loops keep steam generators isolated from the core sodium. Rotating plugs and a diagrid are characteristic mechanical features.
